Sunday Biking
GHC 300 / 4 hours
Easy like Sunday morning, says the song, and that’s why we open our biking adventures at 7 o’clock every Sunday morning. There are fewer visitors to the Shai Hills Reserve on Sundays so we’ll pretty much have the park to ourselves and ride the 21km trails with all the freedom we need without worrying about other users. And the itinerary is the same: After check-in, we’ll bike to the Museum of Natural and Cultural History for a brief visit, and then ride off to the Zebra and Ostrich before heading out on the Baboon and Antelope viewing sprees to Mogo Rock 10km away from the biking reception. After the heart-thumping abseil (rappel), we’ll dash off on the bikes again through Hieowayo and complete the total 21km. Call 020-454-8040 at least 24 hours in advance to book.
Mid-Week Biking
GHC 300 / 4 hours
Adventure and exercise don’t always have to wait till the weekend. We are open on Wednesdays too, to give you a mid-week adventure at the Shai Hills Reserve. We require booking at least 24 hours on 020-454-8040 in advance and the itinerary when you turn up at the park is the same: After check-in, we’ll bike to the Museum of Natural and Cultural History for a brief visit, and then ride off to the Zebra and Ostrich before heading out on the Baboon and Antelope viewing sprees to Mogo Rock 10km away from the biking reception. After the heart-thumping abseil (rappel), we’ll dash off on the bikes again through Hieowayo and complete the total 21km. You should pack a 20-litre backpack to carry your personal effects and water, a hat or cap, sun cream, and insect repellent. Attire should be outdoor walking shirt and shorts, and good trainers.
Abseiling
GHC 300 / 4 hours
If you do not know how to bike, and the idea of two-legged contraptions scare you, we have an adventure for you too. The Hieowayo Peak is a 200-metre outcrop, and it takes 45 minutes of huffing and puffing to ascend it through the ancient caves. At the peak, there is a 35-metre abseil to the base of the ultimate cliff and we are happy to offer it to you if you’re a hiker and not a biker. Like our biking adventures, this offer is available on Sundays and Wednesdays. We require booking at least 24 hours on 020-454-8040 in advance and the itinerary when you turn up at the park is to briefly visit the Museum of Natural and Cultural History, and then drive off to the Zebra and Ostrich before heading out through the Park to the Hieowayo outcrop. You should pack a 20-litre backpack to carry your personal effects and water, a hat or cap, sun cream, and insect repellent. Attire should be outdoor walking shirt and shorts, and good trainers.
Overnight Biking
GHC 700 / 2 days
Imagine the intensity of carrying all your stuff in a 40-litre backpack and riding the rugged trails of the Shai Hills Reserve on an expedition to seek out all its treasures. That is what our overnight adventures are all about. And this option is available throughout the week on any chosen two days but one of the days must not be a Saturday. After checking in at the biking reception, we will help waterproof your gear before you ride without your backpack to visit the Museum of Natural and Cultural History briefly, and then ride off to visit the Zebra and Ostrich. You’ll then pick your backpack and ride 6km to the Elephant Rock to climb it and view wildlife with binoculars. Afterwards, another 6km will take you to the park’s dam in the hope of viewing more wildlife and to the Mogo Rock for the overhang abseil. The biking expedition team will ride to Camp Hieowayo where our overnight camping tents and equipment will all be waiting. After setting up our tents, we’ll cook dinner, tell stories by the fireside and enjoy a great night under the moon and stars. The Hieowayo Peak is a 200-metre outcrop with a 45 minutes’ hiking ascent to ancient caves. At the peak, there is a 35-metre abseil to the base where we will test our resilience once more before descending to prepare breakfast at camp. We will then complete the 10km trail to return to the biking reception for debriefing and departure. Call 020-454-8040 to book at least 72 hours in advance. In order to survive this expedition, one needs to pack the following: A 40-litre backpack, pair of good hiking boots, outdoor walking sandals, cap or hat, 3 water bottles, 3 sets of outdoor clothing, 1 sleeping bag or thick blanket, wash kit – small towel, sponge and soap, 1 bowl for meals, a can of insect repellent, a small box of matchsticks, personal snacks, rain coat, torchlight and spare batteries.
